ABSTRACT
The present investigation was undertaken to study the influence of pre-soaking chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) seeds in resorcinol for different durations on seed germination and seedling growth. The experiment was conducted during the academic session 2025–26 at S.B.S. Government Post Graduate College, Rudrapur, following a Factorial Completely Randomized Design (FCRD) with three replications. Chickpea seeds were pre-soaked in resorcinol (0.1 μM) for 15, 30, and 45 minutes under laboratory conditions. Seed germination percentage, Seedling Vigor Index (SVI), and Seedling Tolerance Index (STI) were evaluated after four days. The unprimed control recorded 67% germination, a mean seedling length of 2.63 cm, and an SVI of 175. Resorcinol (0.1 μM) exhibited a positive effect as a seed-priming agent, with germination ranging from 66 to 83% across the different pre-soaking durations. At 15 minutes of pre-soaking, a seedling length of 2.70 cm, SVI of 225, and STI of 103 were recorded. At 30 minutes, the seedling length increased to 3.10 cm, while SVI and STI were recorded as 205 and 117, respectively. At 45 minutes of pre-soaking, the seedling length was 2.40 cm, with an SVI of 202 and STI of 92.0. Overall, the results indicate that pre-soaking chickpea seeds with resorcinol (0.1 μM) influenced germination and early seedling growth, with the 15- and 30-minute treatments showing comparatively better responses for different growth parameters. The findings suggest that the effectiveness of resorcinol priming is dependent on the duration of pre-soaking.
