Abstract
ABSTRACT
Nanomaterials, due to their unique properties such as high surface area to volume ratio and nanoscale dimensions, have garnered significant attention in various fields, including catalysis and biomedicine. Their surface chemistry plays a crucial role in determining their reactivity, stability, and biocompatibility, which directly influences their performance in specific applications. Surface modifications such as functionalization and coating can significantly enhance or tune these properties, making nanomaterials highly versatile for diverse industrial and medical purposes. This study explores the impact of surface modifications on the catalytic performance, stability, and biocompatibility of nanomaterials, focusing on amine functionalization and PEGylation as examples of common surface modifications. The methodology involved synthesizing nanomaterials with amine functionalization and PEGylation, followed by a comprehensive analysis of their catalytic efficiency, stability under various conditions, and cytotoxicity. Various techniques, including spectroscopy, chromatography, and cell viability assays, were employed to characterize the nanomaterials and assess their performance. The results revealed that amine functionalization significantly improved catalytic activity, making the modified nanomaterials suitable for catalytic applications. However, this modification also led to increased cytotoxicity, limiting their potential biomedical use. In contrast, PEGylation enhanced the biocompatibility and stability of the nanomaterials, reducing cytotoxic effects, but resulted in a decrease in catalytic performance. The study’s findings underscore the importance of tailoring surface chemistry to meet the specific demands of different applications. By carefully balancing catalytic activity with biocompatibility, it is possible to optimize nanomaterials for a wide range of applications in catalysis and biomedicine. This research provides valuable insights into the trade-offs associated with surface modifications, offering guidance for future work aimed at improving the functionality and sustainability of nanomaterials.
