ABSTRACT:
This study compares periphyton abundance, diversity, and composition at different sampling sites along the Kopili River, a tributary in the hilly terrain of Assam’s Karbi Anglong region. Stream ecosystems depend heavily on periphyton groups. These allow periphyton to influence both habitats by acting as a mediator between the substrate below and the water column above. These serve as important bioindicators of the ecological health and water quality of streams, as well as a connection in the movement of materials and energy along various food chains. Numerous ecological factors, either naturally occurring or somewhat man made, control the growth of these communities. Samples were collected from both upstream and downstream areas . Nepali bosti, Das bosti, Kachari gaon are the villages along the river. Various periphytons were seen, including diatoms, navicula,
volvox, spirogyra, etc. It is possible that eutrophication is the cause of the higher periphyton population in the midto-lower reaches (downstream habitats) than in the upper reaches. Seasonal changes such as monsoon dilution effects, are expected to alter densities, with higher population in pre-monsoon periods based on patterns in similar Indian rivers.
