Abstract
ABSTRACT
Coordination compounds play a pivotal role in modern therapeutics due to their unique structural diversity, tunable reactivity, and ability to interact selectively with biological targets. In recent decades, advances in coordination chemistry have significantly expanded their biomedical applications, particularly in diagnosis, drug delivery, and treatment of complex diseases. Metal-based coordination compounds such as platinum, gold, copper, iron, and ruthenium complexes have demonstrated remarkable efficacy as anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral agents. Their mechanisms of action often involve DNA binding, enzyme inhibition, redox activity, and modulation of cellular signaling pathways. Additionally, coordination compounds have been extensively explored in medical imaging, where metal complexes serve as contrast agents in techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and radiotherapy. The incorporation of
biocompatible ligands has further improved their selectivity, stability, and reduced toxicity, making them more suitable for clinical use. This review paper highlights the biomedical significance of coordination compounds in modern therapeutics, emphasizing their therapeutic potential,
mechanisms of action, and recent developments in metal-based drug design. The growing interdisciplinary approach, combining chemistry, biology, and medicine, suggests that coordination compounds will continue to make significant contributions to the development of next-generation therapeutic agents.
